DeWitt Burgess Coon passed away at the home of his son, Lyman A. Coon, De Ruyter, N. Y., June 24, 1950. Mr. Coon was born March 20, 1858, at Jessup, Iowa, the son of Aaron and Maria Burgess Coon. The family moved, to De Ruyter in 1862.
On December 8. 1880, he was married to Ida M. Greenman. To this union two children were born. Cora and Lyman. The daughter died at the age of thirty-four. After the death of his wife in 1927, Mr. Coon married Mrs. Phebe Marble who preceded him in death.
During his active life. he was a successful farmer. After he retired from the farm he worked hard keeping a large garden and yard. He enjoyed his membership in the Grange for many years and earned his 25-year jewel.
He became a member of the Seventh Day Baptist Church and maintained an active interest throughout his life. He served as a trustee of the Church for many years.
Besides his son, with whom he made his home the last few years of his life, he leaves a nephew Melvin Coon, Scottsville, N. Y.; two granddaughters, Mrs. Doris Waterbury, Sacramento, Calif., and Mrs. Ardale Skaggs, Little Genesee, N. Y.; and two great-granddaughters, Nina and Janice Skaggs.
Funeral services were conducted from the home in De Ruyter, Tuesday afternoon, June 27, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Herbert L. Polan, pastor of the Verona Seventh Day Baptist Church officiating, assisted by Rev. Victor W. Skaggs, pastor of the Little Genesee Seventh Day Baptist Church, who sang Mr. Coon’s favorite hymn, “Work for the Night Is Coming.” Interment was in Hillcrest Cemetery.
