Mr. Simon Stone and his wife, Hannah, from Framingham, came to Rutland. He bought land laid to Lieut. Simon Davis, and set up a tannery, (supposed to be the first in town,) where he for several years carried on the tanning and currying business; he sold and bought a farm now owned by his son, Jonas, originally granted to Samuel Sewall, Esq. Mr. Stone was of the same family as others of that name that settled in Rutland. Part of their children were born in Rutland: Daniel, Feb. 23, 1747-8; David, Feb. 24, 1749; Jonas, Aug. 10, 1752; Lucy, Aug., 1754, second Daniel, May 28, 1757; Susanna, Nov. 15, 1760. One daughter is now living, aged 90 years.
The family by the name of Stone that settled in Rutland were respectable, - their descendants are numerous and settled in various parts of America.

DAVID, b. in Rutland 24 Feb. 1749/50, is said to have removed to Chesterfield, N. H., and have bought there on 24 Oct. 1771, the northern half of lot No. 11 and southern half of lot No. 12, in the 8th range. ("History of Chesterfield," p. 459.) His name appears among the signers of the "Association Test" at Chesterfield, 12 June 1776. (Ibid, p. 53.) He was probably the David Stone who appears on the roll dated 22 Sept. 1776 of a company commanded by Capt. John Houghton of Keene, N. H., in Col. Nahum Baldwin's regiment, which joined Washington's army at New York and took part in the Battle of White Plains 28 Oct. 1776, and continued in the service until December. (New Hampshire Revolutionary War Rolls, vol. 1, p. 427.) His further history has not been clearly traced; perhaps he was the David Stone who appears in the United States Census of 1790 as head of a family at Peterborough, N. H. of one male over 16 years, three males under 16 years, and one female.
