Facts and Events
[edit] Records in Amherst County, VA
[edit] NotesDavid A Montgomery The first documentation concerning David Montgomery is in a list of unclaimed letters at the Philadelphia post office in 1739, published in the Pennsylvania Gazette by Benjamin Franklin. It was probably about this time that he met and married Elizabeth Scott, daughter of Matthew Scott of Chestnut Level, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The letter was addressed to 'Montgomery, David, cooper, Lan. Co.' There were several men named David Montgomery in the 18th and 19th century, so David apparently used his occupation of a cooper to designate himself from the others. He also used it in his will in 1791. The next documentation of David was his service during the French and Indian Wars. His name is on the roster of soldiers who fought the Battle of Meadows in 1754, under the command of Lt. Col. George Washington. Another series of documents are patents and deeds to land David Montgomery purchased along Davis Creek in Amherst County, Virginia, beginning in 1763. By 1788, David owned 600 acres in this area. Then in about 1788-1790 David and sons David Jr. and James sold their lands and moved to Wilkes County, Georgia. The two daughters of David and Elizabeth also moved to Georgia.
