Died, at his residence in Rockbridge county, Va., on the 10th of July, 1869, David Laird, aged about 79 years.
Mr. Laird was born in Rockingham county, and removed to Rockbridge, with his father, about 1795. He was a member of Falling Spring church for almost 51 years. Having connected himself with that church upon profession of faith during the pastorate of the Rev. Samuel Houston. Upon the death of his father, who was an elder for many years in the same church, Mr. Laird was elected and ordained to fill the vacancy, and held the office for nearly forty years until his death.
As a citizen, Mr. Laird was universally respected. As a Christian, he walked "with all lowliness and meekness." He was "kind and tender-hearted," liberal in a greater measure, than is common, to the Church, and kind to the poor. To the believers he was an example "in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity." As an officer in the church, he had, and retained to the last the confidence of the people, as well as the respect and affectionate regard of the session. He had a very accurate acquaintance with the plan of salvation and while confessing himself a helpless and undeserving sinner, he cast himself wholly upon the sovereign mercy of God in Christ Jesus and frequently testifying to the grace and love of God, and the all-sufficiency of Christ, he derives in his last sickness, from his faith, great peace, if not ecstatic joy, in view of death. His life was useful and his end was peaceful. "Help Lord, for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of man."
Nearly 20 years following the death of his first wife, Mary Paxton Edmondson, David Laird married on 2 February 1854 in Rockbridge County, Mary Willice.
