"18. David4 Hungerford (Thomas3, Thomas2, Thomas1), of Watertown, Conn., husbandman, born at East Haddam, Conn., and baptized 21 May 1710; died 22 July 1758, of camp-fever near Saratoga. He married about 1736, Sarah Morse of Lyme, Conn., born 7 Dec. 1709. They moved to Plymouth (now Bristol) and later, in 1751, moved to what is now Watertown, but was then known as the parish of Westbury and was in the limits of the town of Waterbury. Mr. Hungerford was a well-to-do farmer for those days, but the fire of patriotism burned fiercely in his breast and 7 Sept. 1755 he enlisted in Capt. Eldad Lewis' Co., of the 4th Conn. Regt. He was discharged 24 Nov. 1755 but reenlisted 11 Apr. 1758. His widow survived him and in Apr. 1761, married Thomas Doolittle of Waterbury as his second wife. 5 Sept. 1758, Sarah the widow of David and her eldest son David went into the Court of Probate of Woodbury and objected to the will of the late David on the ground of unfair treatment to the said wife. The Court sustained the objection and set aside the device, appointing said Sarah and David as administrators of his estate, whereupon they immediately produced an inventory of his property dated 28 Aug. 1758 showing a valuation of £196/13s/7d and the Court then ordered distribution."

"In August, 1755, (during the French and Indian, or Colonial War) General Johnson at Fort Edward sent an urgent appeal for troops to be sent without delay. Between the 1st and 17th of Sept., 73 men were enrolled in the company of Capt. Eldad Lewis of Stoughton; most of them were from Waterbury and vicinity. Among this number were David4 Hungerford who enlisted 7 Sept. 1755, and was discharged 24 Nov. 1755. (He had removed from East Haddam about 1747 and was probably living in that part of ancient Waterbury now called Woodbury, or in Westbury.)

David4 Hungerford's name again appears in the muster-roll of the Second Regiment in Capt. Eldad Lewis' Company, March, 27th to Nov. 16th 1758, and it is marked 'died July 22.' An old autograph record of death made by Timothy Judd of Westbury, (Watertown) reads 'July 22, 1758, died in the camp at Lake George, Mr. David Hungerford.'"
