Information on David Ellis

From "Virginia Immigrants and Adventurers, 1607-1635", by Martha McCartney:

David Ellis came to Virginia on the Mary Margaret. On February 16, 1624, he and his wife were living on the Governor's Land, probably in a household headed by John Carter. David and his wife, Margaret were still there on January 30, 1625. Their names were listed right after John Carter's, suggesting that their homes were in close proximity. David Ellis, a household head, appears to have been a tenant farmer, whose family was relatively well provisioned and supplied with defensive weaponry. Sometime prior to January 1625 David Ellis purchased Lt. Batters' land at Black Point, in the eastern end of Jamestown Island. On January 24, 1625, he received a patent for the Batters property, which he promptly sold to John Radish. By March 18, 1626, David and Margaret Ellis had a child. David was described as John Carter's brother (probably brother-in-law) and an heir of Thomas Swinehow, from whom he inheirited a ring.

From: “Old Churches of Virginia”, Vol. 2, by Ruth Langwell Walker (1857):

The name of Ellis appears at an early day in connection with the Colony of Virginia. David Ellis came out in the second supply of emigrants from England, and was one of the men sent by Captain Smith to build a house for King Powhatan at his favourite seat, Werowocomico, on York River.

From "The Ellis Family" by Col. Thomas Harding Ellis of Richmond Virginia, (1849):

A Sketch of the Family in the Richmond Times-Dispatch: John Ellis of Tuckahoe, known as Peters Creek, is the son of David Ellis.

From "Southern Cousins", by Tom Allman and Elizabeth Helms:

David Ellis came out of the second supply of Immigrants from England, on the ship "Mary Margaret". He lived in the mines near Jamestown, Virginia. He was one of the men sent by Captain John Smith to build a house for King Powhatan (Chief Powhatan, father of Pocahontas) at his favorite seat, Wemowocominco, on the York River in 1608. He is listed in the muster of men at Pashehaighs in 1624. He married Margaret who came in on the "Margaret and John". He started his family register with John Ellis, born ca 1661, also of Welch extraction, as one of the grantees of the second charter of Virginia.
