"David Detrick died at his home in Elizabeth last Wednesday morning, Dec 8th at about 7 o'clock at the advanced age of 102 years; he was the oldest man in this part of the state and was probably the oldest man in Indiana. He had enjoyed good health all his life until within the last few months when he suffered from a complication of diseases resulting from the infirmities of old age with the exception that many years ago he had some afflications supposed to be a cancer which was not cured until it had destroyed his nose. He had also been entirely deaf for some time which made it quite difficult to communicate with him. Mr Detrick came to this country [Harrison County] from Staunton VA, with his father 94 years ago when he was but 8 years of age and had lived in the southern part of the county ever since. He was an honest upright man and was a faithful christian. during his last years his conversation was almost all about the spiritual life. He was for many years a preacher in the United Brethern Church and he preached his last sermon in the elizabeth UB Church on his 87th birthday in May 1894. The deceased was a man of strong convictions and lived a clean, honorable life. He was a great reader and well informed on questions of public concern both in state and nation. He was also a student of the Bible and well informed on the scriptures. Mr Detrick lived through many great changes during the more than a century of his life. At the time of his boyhood, oxen were common as beasts of burden and wooden plows were used. He could remember the time when it was not safe to venture out after night in this country without a torch on account of the wild animals in the forests. Deer, bear, wild geese, and turkeys were so plentiful that the farmer often shot them from the doors of their family homes. This old man was tenderly cared for during his last days by his granddaughter Mrs Laura Grigston, who administered to his every want. His only surviving child, Mrs. Ellen Eurton, of New Albany, called to see him frequently and was with him at the time of his death. He leaves surviving him besides his daughter Mrs. Ellen Eurton of New Albany, 11 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. Funderal services were held last Thursday afternoon at the M.E. Church at Elizabeth conducted by Rev. Valentine Diech, the pastor, and the remains were laid to rest in the Elizabeth Cemetery." --Corydon Democrat (Corydon, Indiana); 15 Dec 1909
