David Luther Berry's origins are somewhat mysterious. (Word of caution--there is another David Berry born about 1858 in Marion County, South Carolina that can easily be confused with David Luther, but he is David Arthur.) He can be tentatively tracked after 1900, but cannot be tracked with certainty until 1910. It is unclear exactly what year he was born. According to the SC Death Index, his estimated birth year was 1855. However, census records support a date of as late as 1862. What is known for certain is that his father died in July 1862 while serving in the Confederate Army. His family (his father and mother married about 1860) has not conclusively been found in the 1860 census, but the likeliest match lists his father and mother with a two-day-old infant daughter. This could still have been David (just with wrong sex listed), or he could have been born later. According to a transcription of his death certificate, his parents were Treadway Berry and Nancy Wood.

According to a deed in family papers, David was in Orangeburg County by the 1880s, although where he was before his uncertain. Could it be that after his father's death, he and his mother went to live with relatives and he is listed in a household with another surname? Could his mother have remarried and he be listed in their household with another surname?

He cannot be identified conclusively in the 1880 census, although there are a couple of possibilities.

David was married twice. His first wife's name is unknown, although if he is the person listed in the 1900 census as L.D. Berry, his wife's name was Emla (or Eula?), and they married sometime around 1880. It is difficult to determine if the 1900 listing is correct, however, because of a large, dark smudge on the bottom left corner of the page that just happens to cover this household. What is certain is that he had a number of children by this first wife, and than he later married Magnolia (known as Miley) Altman in about 1903 (according to the 1910 census they had been married 7 years and had 3 children). Close to the same time, it appears that Miley's father married David's daughter from his first marriage, Victoria, who was around the same age as Miley. It appears that at some point the Altman and Berry families both living in Lexington County and so may have known each other for quite some time before these marriages occurred.
