Mary Copeland, age 45, born in Tennessee
son: Rufus Copeland, age 14, born in Alabama
daughter: Fanny Copeland, age 14, born in Alabama
daughter: Media Copeland, age 11, born in Alabama

Note that Media is not listed in the 1870 census. Also, the sex column has M overwritten with F. Possibly there were 2 children (Dink and Media) on the original form and the transcriber (from the original now-destroyed form to the ledger in the image) accidentally combined them on one line. Media may, in fact, have been Mary's future daughter-in-law, Almedia Herring, who is not listed with her parents in the 1880 census and might have been staying with the Copeland family at the time of the census. There is no other record for Dink/Dank in the 1880 census.

  8. His mother was living in Etowah County in the 1870 census.
  9. His stated or implied birth year varied from census to census, always earlier than 1870. However, if he was born before June 1870, then there was an omission on both the 1870 and 1880 censuses - possible, but not proven. His death certificate says he was born July 1870, which only requires an error in the 1880 census record.
