Daniel Whitty was a Merchant Navy seaman who was aboard the M.V. San Emiliano when it sailed from Swansea on 29 April 1942 and later joined convoy OS 27 which consisted of 48 ships and 11 escorts. On 9 August 1942, the San Emiliano was hit by two torpedoes fired by German submarine U-155 and exploded in a huge fireball. There were only 9 survivors from the 48 on board. Daniel Whitty is commemorated on the World War 11 Mercantile Marine Memorial at Tower Hill, London. The sinking of the M.V. San Emiliano was coverd by Thames Television in its World at War Series - Episode 10 "Wolf Pack: U-Boats in the Atlantic (1939–1944)".
