"49. Daniel Roper (5) (Ephraim 4, Ephraim 3, John 2, John 1) Brother of Ephraim, founder of the Sterling Line, son of Ephraim and Sybillah (Moore) Roper, b. Worcester, October 2, 1730, m. Sutton. March 18, 1756, Sarah Greenwood, daughter of Daniel and Sarah _____ Greenwood, b. Sutton August 3, 1734. Her parents came from Framingham to that town about 1730, and were received, into the church that year.
Daniel was two years old at the settlement of his father's estate in Worcester, and his mother was made his guardian. At the age of seventeen his uncle, Elijah Moore of Oxford, assumed the guardianship and it is more than likely that he remained in his kinsman's family for some years, as Mrs. Moore (Dorothy Larned) was the granddaughter of Ruth Roper (No. 10). One of the bondsmen either lived in or had business connection with Sutton and may have been the means of placing Daniel there. Nothing definite concerning him has been found between the dates of August, 1747, when Moore took the young man, and 1756, the time of his marriage to Sarah Greenwood. The records show that he continued a citizen of Sutton till he located in Rutland. He entered the Revolutionary Army at an early date, 1775-6, under Capt. Benjamin Richardson (Sterling) in the regiment of Col. Nicholas Dike: was at Dorchester Heights. He d. Rutland February 27, 1821. His wife passed away January 7, 1808."
