Daniel Craig McCallum (January 21, 1815 – December 27, 1878) was a Scottish-born American railroad engineer, general manager of the New York and Erie Railroad and Union Brevet Major General of the United States Military Railroads during the American Civil War, known as one of the early pioneers of management. He set down a group of general principles of management, and is credited for having developed the first modern organizational chart.

    Daniel C. McCallum

    Civil War Union Brevet Major General. His family emigrated from Scotland to Rochester NY, where he apprenticed as a carpenter and later established his own building and construction business. He became well known for inventing the McCallum bridge arch truss, which he designed during his time building bridges on the Erie Railroad. Subsequently he became a consulting engineer for the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad and was appointed Superintendent and General Manager of Military Railroads by President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War.
