In 1870, he was living in Oskaloosa, Mahaska Co, Iowa and working as a Real Estate Agent. In 1880, he was still in Oskaloosa and was a Superintendant at a Gas Works. "HUNT, D. W., superintendent and manager of the Oskaloosa gas works; born in North Carolina, January 7, 1832; when five years of age he moved with his parents to Indiana; he received his education at Haverford, Pennsylvania, and afterward engaged in teaching at Bloomingdale Academy; he came to Iowa in 1865, and located in Oskaloosa and engaged in real estate and insurance; he has been connected with the gas works for the past five years; he married Miss Mary R. Llewelyn, from Haverford, Pennsylvania, in 1859; they have five children, Harmon, Anna R., Esther D., Hannah R. and H.
