Notes

Hale Family:

This ancient and distinguished Giles county family is of German descent; the original spelling of the name being Heil or Heyl. The first of this family of whom there is anything known, is Capt. Edward Hale, born in 1779, near the Blackwater river section of Franklin county. He established his home on Wolf creek, near the confluence of that stream with New River. He was a Revolutionary soldier. He married, in 1785, Patsy Perdue. The Perdues are of French-Huguenot origin.

Edward & Patsy had ten children. Edward died in 1820, leaving a fine estate to his family. Judge David E. Johnston in his history of the "Middle New River Settlements" says of him: "He was a man of rather small stature, fair complexion and blue eyes, intelligent, and became a prominent figure on the border in his day, engaging in Indian wars, fights and shirmish- es. He was with the party under Capt. Matthew Farley, that followed the Indi- ans in the summer of 1783, after their attack on Mitchell Clay's family, on the Bluestone at Clover Bottom, and was in the skirmish had with Indians on Pond Fork of Little Coal River, in which he killed an Indian. A strip of hide was taken from this Indian's back; it was used for a number of years as a razor strop.

Daniel Hale, son of Edward & Patsy. Paulina M. Hale, daughter of Daniel & Caroline E Watts. Paulina born, Nov. 15, 1833, married Calahill E. Tolley. Linnie E. Tolley, daughter of Paulina & Calahill, was born May 20, 1863, Linnie Married George L. Cole,

Daniel Hale was born a short distance from the of Narrows, Va. He married Caroline E. Watts of Giles County. They had 12 children.
