PHILLIPS -- Daisy Wing Harradon of Phillips was presented the Boston Post gold-headed cane recently by Town Manager Laura Toothaker. The cane is kept by the town's oldest citizens, passed on from one to the next. Mrs. Harradon receives the cane from Frank Badger. The presentation of the cane has been a Phillips tradition for decades.
Born Jan. 4, 1893, Mrs. Harradon has spent most of her life in Phillips in the vicinity of Toothaker Pond. She did move to the Auburn area in 1919 where she was a practical nurse until her marriage to Mr. Merrick. During her 26 years as Mrs. Merrick, she assisted her husband in his management of apartment buildings and antique business.
Returning to the Phillips area in 1964, Mrs. Merrick was remarried to Merle Harradon. The couple resided in town during the summer and wintered in Florida as long as they were able.
Mrs. Harradon has the reputation of being "a wonderful cook" and "a sweet person who worries about you instead of herself." The daughter of Bion and Mary Brown Wing, also residents of Phillips during their lifetimes, Mrs. Harradon now lives with her son, Maurice B. Toothaker in his home near the shore of Toothaker Pond.
