John Barrymore
Jack seemed to romance the actresses he worked with almost reflexively, as if it were expected of him. Tallulah Bankhead and Katharine Hepburn were two who resisted; Mary Astor was among the majority who didn't. He could also get careless with come-on lines. 'You remind me of a beautiful white dove on a black velvet cushion,' he purred to actress Constance Binney. 'That's what you told my sister last week,' she shot back. One reason for the trouble that ensued after he caught a woman, especially if he married her, was booze-fueled jealousy that sometimes led to violence. He was 28 when he married his first wife, socialite Katherine Harris, in 1910. They separated after six years.
