Eileen Woldshen told Jim Johnson that Clifford did not want to be drafted when WWI was declared so he would ride his horse from Glenella to Mayfield, Manitoba, to skip the draft board. When they came to one village he headed to the other one. He would sleep out in the bush with his horse and died of pnemonia because of this. He never married.
