    State of Tennessee Morgan County} SS.
    On this 15th day of October 1832 personally appeared in Open Court before John M.
    Davis, Thomas Jack and Thomas S. Lewis Justices of the Court of Pleas and quarter sessions
    now sitting & being a court of Record Clemmon Phillips a resident of the County of Morgan and State of Tennessee aged sixty-nine years, who after being duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. That he was born, the 18th day of February 1763 in Dobs [sic, Dobbs]

    County State of North Carolina and lived in Ansel [sic, ? Anson?] County State of North
    Carolina in the year of 1779 Between the 25th day of December in said year & the first of
    January 1780 he volunteered and entered the United States service as a volunteer under the
    following named officers Captain Patrick Bogan [Patrick Boggan], Lieutenant Bogan [Patrick
    Boggan, Jr.], Major John Jackson, Colonel Thomas Wayde [sic, Thomas Wade]. Rendezvoused
    at Captain Bogan's, and served as a Ranger against the Tories in said County and was honorably but verbally discharged at Captain Bogan's on or about the first of April 1780 by Captain Bogan.
    He again volunteered and entered the United States service on or about the last of September in the year of 1780 under the before mentioned officers, marched and rendezvoused on the North side of the Pedee River not far from Ansel old Court house and having crossed the Pedee River at mast Ferry [sic, Mast's Ferry] to get to the place of rendezvous, stationed there ten or fifteen days having joined Colonel Smith's [Robert Smith of the NC State Legion] Regiment at the place of rendezvous of on said [sic] took some Tories there then marched towards Wilmington & went in two miles of Wilmington and there defeated the Tories having taken 7 Tories prisoners & killed
    7. The British Army having made an attempt to cross the Cape Fear River the 2 regiments were
    forced to retreat & retreated up the Cape Fear River about 25 miles stationed there about a week & then marched down the River again to the Brick House [November 15, 1781] in about 2 miles of Wilmington had about a half a day scrimmage with the British in which scrimmage the
    Americans lost one man, the British having again crossed the River they again retreated up the River about 30 miles was stationed there the balance of his three months Tour, having served his time which he volunteered for. He was then on or about the first of January 1781 honorably but verbally discharged by Captain Bogan. He has no documentary evidence whereby he can prove his services as above stated nor is there any persons whose testimony he can procure who can testify to the same, he has no record of his age except a copy which he drew from a record made by his father, which record of his father's is if now existing, in the State of North Carolina which copy is herewith enclosed, he moved from the state of North Carolina in October 1781 Green County North Carolina now State of Tennessee lived there about 9 years moved from Green County to Jefferson County & stayed there 8 years, then moved to Roane County stayed there about 14 years, all of which last named places is in the state of Tennessee. He then moved from Roane County to the state of Masoria [sic, Missouri?] & lived in the state of Masora about 18 months moved back to Tennessee Roane County stayed in Roane about 3 years & then moved to Morgan County Tennessee where he now resides. This applicant may be mistaken as to dates but he cannot be mistaken as to the matters of absolute facts by him stated concerning his Service he hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension Roll of the agency of any State.

    On this __ day of April 1833 personally appeared in Open Court before John M Davis,
    David S Lavender & John Williams Justices of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions for said County now sitting Clemmon Phillips the person named in the foregoing declaration for a pension who being duly sworn deposeth and saith that by reason of old age and consequent loss of memory he cannot swear positively as to the precise length of his service but according to the best of his recollection he served not less than six months as private and for such service he claims a pension and he further says that at the time of his making the original declaration and also at this time It was & is still out of his power to get a clergyman to Court as the clergyman residing in his Neighborhood was & is from indisposition unable to get to Court that the following persons residents in his Neighborhood can testify as to his character for veracity and as soldier of the revolution John Williams, Shadrach Stephens, Ruckin Jones, John M Davis, Elijah Ruse,
    Michael Stonecypher & John Staples, Daniel S Lavender, James Robertson – William Holland –
    Sworn to & subscribed in open Court this 15th day of April 1833
