Clement K. Wall first shows up on the 1800 Federal Census Population Schedule of Guilford Co., NC. I suspect he was not born in Guilford County and possibly not even in North Carolina. The 1850 Census states that he was born in North Carolina but census records are not infallible. Whoever provided the information to the census taker might have assumed Clem was born in North Carolina since he had once lived there. The identity of his parents is unknown; however there is speculation that their names were James Wall and Nancy White. I have yet to see any proof or circumstantial evidence to support this theory nor have I found James Wall on the 1800 Census of Guilford Co., NC.
Clem Wall moved his family to Williamson Co., TN about 1804 settling in the Flat Creek community. During the 1830's he and most of his children migrated to Fayette Co., TN. According to The Goodspeed Histories and Flat Creek It's Land And It's People Clem Wall was of Scotch Irish descent and of the old Presbyterian faith. Note: The Scotch-Irish are not people of mixed Scottish and Irish ancestry. They are Ulster Scots, being mostly descended from Presbyterians and other protestant lowland Scottish people.
Margaret Wall died in 1843 in Fayette Co. and was buried at Union Cemetery which is adjacent to Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church. Her maiden name is unknown; however, the name Brown appears to have some significance in this family since it was given as a middle name to three or four of her children. Some possibilities for this are (1) Maybe Margaret's maiden name was Brown, (2) Maybe Clem's mother's maiden name was Brown, (3) Another possibility for so many children having the Brown for a middle name is that maybe Clem was adopted by someone named Brown. More research is needed to unravel this puzzle.
In 1846 Clement Wall purchased 800 acres of land in Marshall Co., MS which he finished making payments on in 1850. He is found in the 1850 census residing with his son, Hanceford Wall, and died in 1854 in Marshall Co., MS. He is buried at Mt. Zion (West) Cemetery, Benton Co., MS. Clem Wall died intestate leaving the 800 acres of land which could not be fairly divided among his heirs. In their attempts to sell this land as one large parcel there were disputes and a lengthy law suit ensued. This case was finally settled in 1868 when the land was divided into three parts and sold.
