Different answers were reported to different census enumerators, and in other public records, about Chloe Stansell's name, age and birthplace. Apparently Chloe and those around her did not know or wish to disclose some details about her past.
Chloe was the youngest daughter of the second marriages of her previously widowed parents. Before the age of 18 years old Chloe was an orphan.
In 1850 Chloe was living with Mary Hammond (55) and Mary's sons Franklin (24) and Henry (22) in Saline, while her brother Jacob and sister Phidelia were married and living near each other in Green Oak.
It is possible that Franklin or Henry Hammond fathered Chloe's daughter Rosalia born in 1851.
