Chester J. Smitley, a resident and merchant of Milton, Wis., since 1945, was born at Berne, Ind., June 27, 1915. His life, before coming to Milton, was spent in Indiana where he was educated in the public schools and went into business as a grocery store owner and operator.
On April 4, 1942, Mr. Smitley was married to Margaret Lowther, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norton Lowther, of Milton, Wis. In June of 1945 the Smitley moved to Milton, Wis., where Mr. Smitley purchased and operated a grocery store. Despite the severe handicap of poor health, Chester exercised ambition and initiative in his business and community relations. His death, on November 16, 1948, following surgery, was mourned by a host of friends.
Chester Smitley was a sincere Christian. He was a member of the Brethren Church in his native state. Since coming to Milton, he was active in attendance and work, as health permitted, with his wife in the Milton Seventh Day Baptist Church.
Surviving him are his wife and two daughters, Carolyn Jane and Mary Ellen, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph C. Smitley; his grandmother, Mrs. W. N. Smitley; and nine brothers and sisters.
Farewell services were conducted on Thursday, November 18, at the Milton Seventh Day Baptist Church, by Rev. Elmo Fitz Randolph, pastor. Interment was in the Milton Cemetery. E. F. R.
