Charlie Lockyer was born on 31st October 1889 at Newport on the Isle of Wight, son of Agnes Lockyer, formerly Parsons, and her husband Joseph Lockyer, a labourer and bricklayer. The 1891 census finds Charlie living with his parents and siblings at 4 Ash Road on the eastern side of Newport. By 1901 they had moved a short distance to 3 Robin Hood Street, and by 1911 they were living just around the corner at 9 John Street. In 1911 Charlie was described as a mariner.

In 1916, aged 26, Charlie married Catherine Meekins. They went on to have five children between 1918 and 1923, including twins in 1921. Their eldest daughter died as a baby in 1918. All the children were born on the Isle of Wight.

Charlie worked as a Merchant Seaman. He was described as a “Mate of Barge” on his Merchant Seaman’s Identity Certificate from around 1920, which also included a photograph.

At the outbreak of the Second World War, Charlie and Catherine were living at 16 Albany Road in Newport. Charlie was working as a wharf labourer by this time.

Charlie died in 1943, aged 53. Catherine survived him by nearly 38 years.

Charlie’s birth was registered under the name Charlie, which is presumably how he was known. Some later records, such as his death certificate, give his name as Charles, which is often the formal name of men known as Charlie.

On the household form itself the address is given as “9 St John Road, Barton Village, Newport”, whereas on the enumerator’s cover sheet it is given as “9 John Street, Newport”. The reference to Barton Village clarifies that this is indeed the road called John Street on the eastern side of Newport, off Robin Hood Street, not to be confused with St John’s Road to the south of the town.
