Charlie Payne: Biographical Information

Charlie Payne and his wife Priscilla Johnson Payne lived and worked at Magnolia Plantation as gardeners. Charlie died in a house fire at the plantation in 1954. He is buried in the cemetery at Magnolia Plantation. Charlie was noted for having lost one leg while saving a man from being run over by a train. On his World War I Draft Registration form he lists himself as Charles Payne born April 20, 1878 in Charleston. He lists his next of kin as Priscilla and his employer as Mr. (?) Hastie. The Hastie family are the descendants of the Draytons and heirs to Magnolia Plantation. On the 1900 census, he and Priscilla are in the household of Catherine Johnson.
