[edit] Records of Charles WordElizabeth Adams Word, whose first husband, Charles Word, had been killed Oct 7, 1780 at the Battle of King's Mountain. Elizabeth had eight children by Charles Word. She was to have eight more by Richard Hooper. When Charles Word was dying on the battlefield, he made out a will which would have given Elizabeth only a child's share of his property. Elizabeth and Richard went to court and got the battlefield will set aside so they could use all of Charles Word's estate until his children came of age. In 1782 the estate was: 420 acres, 7 slaves, 4 horses, 12 cows, 5 sheep. In 1782 the perishable part of the Charles Word estate was sold.
