The National Cylopaedia of American Biography states Charles "graduated at Norwich University in 1861." Charles and his brother Edwin were very involved in the Civil War. Edwin as Col. and Charles became a colonel in 1862. Charles lost his right eye "as a result of a wound received at Funkstown, Md, in 1863." "was brevetted brigadier-general for "gallantry on the field" March 13, 1865." Edwin and Charles studied law and practiced in NY city with their uncle Edwin W. Stoughton.
