Charles A Sexton, 99, a Topekan for 77 years, died Wednesday at his home, 1222 North Kansas Avenue. Early in 1855 Mr. Sexton came to Topeka from Wellington, Ohio, to help establish Kansas as a "Free Soil State". He purchased property in Topeka in 1855 and from that time was a resident here. He was a carpenter by trade, but later entered the merchantile business. He retired from active business in 1880 when he sold the book and toy store he operated in the 600 block on Kansas Avenue to W. F. Weber. He is survived by a son, Ernest L. Sexton, of Topeka, and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 10 o'clock on Friday, November 11th, at Shellabarger's Chapel. Burial in Topeka Cemetery.
