    "327. Charles Phelps, b. Northampton, Mass., 16 Aug., 1717. d. April 17, 1789, m. 24 April, 1740, Dorothy Root, (daughter of Hezekiah and Martha (Bridgeman) Root), b. Northampton, died Marlborough, Vt., 11 Sept., 1777. He m. 2nd, Esther Kneeland 2 Nov., 1778. She was a widow, b. Boston, Mass. After Mr. Phelps's death she m. for 3d husband, Israel Smith. She had no issue by first and third husband. She died 22 Sept., 1813. Mr. Phelps graduated at Harvard 1736, [not listed in Harvard Graduates studied law and first settled in Hadley, Mass., removing from there to Marlboro, Vt. in 1746. He took sides with the state of New York in the great controversy of the boundary question, and was appointed by Gov. George Clinton of New York State, a Justice."
