Charles joined the confederacy in Mobile, Alabama and fought at Spanish Fort. He joined with one of his friends Tom Mclocklin.

He worked as a printer for the Mobile Press Register.

He and his family moved to Pascagoula, Mississippi and worked in a printing shop around 1860.

He drowned with one of his sons in Pascagoula near the lighthouse. They had gone out oystering and the fog rolled in on them.
