Taken From the 1885 History of Steuben County, Indiana page 752: Charles enlisted in the Seventy-fifth Illinois, in the fall of 1862; came home on a sick furlough and died March 18, 1864

Louise McLain Shambaugh has: Died of typhoid fever, chronic diarrhea & pneumonia while on sick furlough from the Civil War. He was his mother's support after her husband John's death, giving her half of his earnings. She owned nothing but her clothes and bedding. He contracted disease at Whiteside, Tennessee, due to hard marching, sleeping on wet groud and exposure in line of duty during the winter campaign. Pvt. E company 75 IL Vols. Inf. (Capt. Frost's Co.), 5'8", lt. complexion, brown hair, blue eyes.
