He was initiated into the Masonic Lodge No. 16 at LeonS3 on 17 Nov 1894 and raised to Master Mason on 12 Jan 1895, beginning a long membership with this franternal organization. Charles became friends with a man named Peter Byron Arthur, Secretary of the Lodge, who would later become important to the survival of our branch of the Hogue Family, In 1886, Charles married his first wife, Linda. This Union produced two children, Johnnie and Caldonia. Late in the marriage. Caldonia apparently died at an early age, and soo thereafter, around 1902, Linda left and took Johnnie back to Texas. Johnnie's wife still lives in Bowie, Montague Co., Texas. On 22 Feb 1903, Charles marries his second wife, Lenora Gatlin Noble, who already has a son from her first marriage, Frank A. Noble (b. 29 Feb 1900). They have seven children.S1
- Charley and Family farmed in the Rubottom and Courtney communities for quite some time. He also contracted with the U.S. Government to Carry the mail from Rubottom to Grady around 1915 and worked as a road overseer for Love County as well. Hard work in bad weather soon took its toll on him however, and Charley developed Dropsy (Edema) from a kidney infection just a few weeks before his last child was born. Having been dimitted for non-payment of dues ($1 per year) in Dec. of 1914. The members of the Leon Lodge reinstated his membership on 7 July 1917. Charles Sherman Hogue passed away on 24 Jul 1917, aged 52, in Rubottom, Love County, Oklahoma. He is buried in the Rubottom Cemetery. Nora was interviewed on 26 Jan 1918 by Peter Byron Arthur and asked if she would submit to her children entering the Masonic children's home in Guthrie, Oklahoma. She declined and instead was granted outside assistance by the Grand Lodge in the form of a pension of $20.00 a month. Peter Byron Arthur was instrumental in keeping this money coming in; his bleak correspondence between the Grand Lodge and Nora maintained a family income until she was eligible for Social Security in 1939. Peter Byron Arthur died in 1949 at the age of 94 and is buried in Leon. Lenora Gatlin Hogue passed away from complications of a stroke on 24 Dec 1959 and is buried in Gilroy, California.S1
