HOPEDALE- A crash in Harrison County on Tuesday night claimed the life of Charles J. Gump of Adena, who was thrown from his vehicle. Gump, 21, of 415 Park Ave., was killed at about 8:45 p.m. Tuesday in a Hopedale-area crash on Green Township 65 near the border of Jefferson County. Today, a spokeswoman from Post 41 of the Ohio State Highway Patrol in Wintersville said Gump was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, and he was ejected from his vehicle. She said the crash is still under investigation. Alcohol is not believed to have been involved. According to the Post 41 report, the crash occurred as Gump was traveling south on Green Township 65 in a 2001 Ford Ranger when he lost control of the vehicle. The Ford Ranger traveled off the right side of the road before it struck an embankment, and the vehicle rolled onto its left side. The vehicle rolled multiple times, and it came to rest on its wheels in a ditch. The spokeswoman did not indicate that excessive speed was a factor in the crash. Troopers from Post 41 were still investigating at the scene early today, according to reports. SOURCE: The Intelligencer Wheeling News-Register
Adena man dies in crash By LINDA L. HULL, Times Leader Staff Writer NOT WEARING a seat belt may have cost a 21-year-old man his life, according to the Steubenville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Charles J. Gump, 21, 415 Park Ave., Adena, was traveling south near the Harrison-Jefferson county line on Township Road 65 Tuesday around 9 p.m. when his truck drifted off the side of the road, struck an embankment and then overturned before slidding off the road and flipping over several times. The driver then was ejected from the vehicle before coming to rest on its top. "I'm not God or anything but it looks to me like if he had been wearing his seat belt, he most likely would still be alive," said Lt. Matt Evans, post commander. "I'm not saying he wouldn't have gotten hurt but the whole front compartment (driver and passenger side) was unharmed." He added, "We try to get everyone to wear their seat belts. I know it's only a secondary offense, we have to stop them for something else first, but it's really frustrating in this case." The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
