About Charles Davis
Charles Edmund Davis was born abt. April 1786 in Middlesex, England, the son of Thomas and Mary Davis. He was baptized on 17 April 1786 in St Andrew, Holborn, Middlesex, England and is listed in the parish register. He married Charlotte Rigby*, daughter of Thomas Rigby and his wife Susannah "Susan" on 10 September 1809 in St Mary, Newington [Parish] in nearby Southwark [Borough of London]. "Charlotte Davis" and her husband "Charles Davis" are both mentioned in the will of Charlotte's father, Thomas Rigby, whose will was proven on 14 December 1819 in Stepney, Middlesex, England.
Charles Edmund Davis and his wife Charlotte had at least four children together [there were likely others not yet identified], two of which, Charles (born in 1811) and Richard Davis [born in 1828] are listed in England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975 and identify "Charles Edmund Davis" as their father and "Charlotte" as their mother. Another son Edmund Charles Davis born in November 1822 identifies "Charles Edmund Davis" as his father on his marriage record with wife Jane Hargreaves on 6 May 1846 in St George in the East, Tower Hamlets, Middlesex, England.
Charles Davis died on 20 August 1860 in Middlesex, England. His will was proven on 9 October 1860 and named his wife Charlotte Davis "of 2 Crane-grove aforesaid Widow the Relict and Charles Davis of 94 Broad-street in the said County Ironmonger the Son two of the Executors". - Note: several Ancestry Member Trees claim that Charles Edmund Davis married a "Charlotte Trayler", but marriage records clearly show that Charlotte Rigby was his wife. In addition, in the will of Charlotte's father, Thomas Rigby (1764-1819), proven 14 December 1819 in Stepney, Middlesex, England, he clearly names his daughter "Charlott Davis" and her husband "Charles Davis" in his will, listed below:
- I give and bequeath unto my daughter Charlott Davis fifty pounds money likewise the interest of of one thousand pounds _____ five per rent owing her natural life for her own sole use no present or other future husband to have only power of ____ over it whatsoever and at her ____ to be disposed of in the following manner that five hundred pounds ____ ____ five per r__t tobe equally divided amongst all her children & lawfully begotten as they attain the age of twenty one years share and share alike in trust of my Executors and one hundred pounds ___ five per rent to her husband Charles Davis and the remaining four hundred pounds ___ the principal be equally divided amongst all my children that may be living share and share alike...
