Presumably this would suggest Charles died of wounds at wikipedia:Battle of New Bern, but there is no indication of this on the memorial page. The Hale collection has two entries showing his death on 10 Oct 1864, one based on a notice in the New Haven Palladium 28 Oct 1864, the other based on a notice in the Columbian Register 5 Nov 1864. These items (viewable at Family History Centers) are just index entries and give no details beyond date (10 Oct 1864) and age of death (27)..
