He enlisted at Harrisburg May 8, 1861 and was mustered into service at Camp Wayne in Chester County, PA. He was a private with Co. H, 7th Pennsylvania Reserves (aka 36th Pennsylvania Infantry). He was captured at the battle of White Oak Swamp July 1, 1862, and released in time to be killed in action at the battle of Antietam.

Charles is buried in Trindle Springs Lutheran Cemetery, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

His widow, Louisa married Amos Coover in 1865.
