Although Charles was illegitimately born "Charles Bailey," he adopted the surname of his mom's second husband. Known on early census records as "Charles Ramsden," he later added the surname "Bailey" to be like his mother and half-sisters.
BIRTH: There was a discrepancy in dates. One family record said it was 1 Sep 1839. Another said it was 31 Aug. 1839. And another said 13 Aug 1839. None of them were right.
Copy of Civil Birth registration sent to me by Charles & Suzanne Brown <[email protected]>:
"Charles was born 29 Aug 1837 at "12 night" in Mould Greave, Haworth Parish, Yorkshire, England. His name at birth was "Charles Bailey." Only a mother's name is given, and the record is signed with an X, the mark of his mother, Jane Bailey. The birth was registered in Keighley District, Vol. 23, page 172, entry 35."
Suzanne Brown also wrote (email July 2005), "Charles' age is given correctly for most records until he is 20 or so! For example, he was 3 on the June 1841 census, 13 on the March 1851 census, and 17 on the ship's roster and pioneer roster in 1855. So the discrepancy arose later and was not due to any apparent deception on the part of his parents...his half-sisters were also a year or two older than the birthdates given on their tombstones and in most family records."
BIRTH PLACE: Mould Greave was just a farm, a cluster of cottages, located about a mile from the village of Oxenhopeand a mile from the village of Haworth. Today it is considered a part of Oxenhope. Haworth itself was not a parish but a chapelry in Bradford parish. The place could be given as Mouldgreave (modern) or Mould Greave (as spelled on an 1852 map), Haworth (subdistrict), Keighley (district), Yorkshire (county), England.

MARRIAGE: Could also be 17 Nov 1863.
BAPTISM: Charles Bailey was baptized into the LDS Church by John Taylor. Microfilm #0027410. Wellsville Ward, Cache Stake. LDS Membership Records. pg 25. He was rebaptised and confirmed on 18 July 1875.

IMMIGRATION TO US: Charles Ramsden Bailey came to the U.S. on the ship "Charles Buck" which departed Liverpool, England on January 17, 1855 (FHL microfilm #25690, pg 100 of ship's register)
He was traveling with: Jane Ramsden [Bailey written in later], age 55; Mary A. Bailey, age 25; Sarah Bailey, age 20; Charles Ramsden [ditto on the Bailey, written in afterward], age 17 (labourer).
DEATH: Discrepancy. Could also be 19 Jan 1910.

Charles wrote in his autobiography that he was born 31 Aug 1839 in Honley, but his tombstone gives a birthdate of 1 Sep 1839. Census records indicate he was 3 years old on 6/7 June 1841, and 13 years old on 30/31 March 1851. According to the 1851 census, he was born in Haworth.
