- The use of Cassie and Catherine makes matching of records difficult, and it would nice to have a birth or death record to tie things together given various discrepancies discussed below, but these have not been located.
The original information on this page was based solely on the 1870 census where her age is 18, suggesting a birth in 1852, and showing her as a daughter of Thomas Bates. Other records, including the 1860 census, as well as those cited, suggest her birth was August 1850. This is problematical as the 1900 census says her parents married about 1854, and their ages would make them only 18 and 17 at the time of Cassie's birth. She does not appear to belong to Thomas' father (the youngest siblings Zachariah and Madison are living with their mother Margaret in 1870 census and Cassie is not) so not a sister living with him. In fact, as Thomas is listed as living at home in the 1850 census with no apparent wife yet has a 10 year old daughter in 1860, it is almost impossible she is his daughter. It appears she is a daughter from Sarah's first marriage.
Find A Grave lists a daughter Jessie 1874-1952, apparently based on proximity of their graves in the cemetery. However there is no sign that she had a daughter Jessie, there being only a son Richard in the 1880 census and the 1900 census above indicates she only ever had 1 child. This appears to be Eldred's second wife, whom he married in 1922 after Cassie died.
