Catherine Johnston, who was listed in the 1850 Census with or in the adjoining residence of John Ruland and his young children appears to possibly be John Ruland's second wife [listed as "Catherine J. Ruland" in the 1860 Census] and mother of John Ruland's last five children. This is only an educated guess [not proven] at this point until a marriage record is found in the Queens County, NY area. It should also be noted that "Johnston" may not be Catherine's maiden name since she was about age 29 in the 1850 Census. Additional research needed.
