Obituary
Miss Catherine Ault was born in Wayne county, Ohio, March 14, 1831. She was married to Jacob Z. Bowman October 9, 1851. Soon after their marriage they moved to Iowa, where they lived until after Mr. Bowman's death in the hospital at Springfield, Mo., on November 5, 1862, when Mrs. Bowman and four children moved back to Wayne county, Ohio. On April 10, 1873, Mrs. Bowman was married to Hiram Protsman and soon thereafter moved to near Lima, Allen county, Ohio, and after some years' residence there moved to Centralia, Kas. After the death of Mr. Protsman, Mrs. Protsman and the family lived for several years in Seneca, Kas., and then moved back to Centralia, where she has lived since.
Mrs. Protsman died Sunday, March 26, 1899, aged 68 years and 12 days, after a sickness of seven days. There remain to mourn the mother's departure two sons and two daughters and their families. Mrs. Protsman has been a member of the M.E. church about twenty-five years. Her life in Centralia won the esteem of all who knew her. She was faithful in her attendance upon the means of grace, and prominent in advancing the financial interest of the church. The cheerful spirit and elevating influence that pervaded her home made one feel that it was a fit emblem of the happy home above. She was a devoted Christian, a loving mother, a faithful friend, a thoughtful neighbor, and a useful citizen.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. G.W. Browning, assisted by Rev. G.A. Traut, before an overflowing congregation at the M.E. church. The sermon was appropriate, the music was excellent and the services were impressive. The altar was beautifully decorated, and the metallic casket was covered with choice flowers arranged by kind hands and loving hearts. Among these floral offerings none were more lovely than "The Gates Ajar" with the sacred name of "Mother" laid upon the threshold. At the close of the services a very large procession followed the remains of Sister Protsman to the cemetery, where she was laid to rest to await the coming of the resurrection.
Asleep in Jesus; blessed sleep,
From which none ever wakes to weep;
A calm and undisturbed repose,
Unbroken by the last of foes.
