Bebe was inducted into the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center as a Western Heritage Honoree for 1984, and honored for her indomitable spirit, which epitomizes the courage and strength of the Western Woman. She officially received the honor on June 23, 1984. From: Roswell Daily Record, Sunday, 18 March 1984: Beebe, also known as "the lady in red," when 16 years old, wrote the song "Arizona Waltz," which later became known as "The Kelly Waltz." She also wrote "Adios Mi Muchachos" and "Beside the Hondo," which was recorded in the 1950's by Bob and Wanda Ware. (Bob was Beebe's first husband.) From: Roswell Daily Record, Sunday, 23 July 1989: BEBE CLEMENTS Graveside services are tentatively scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday, July 24, 1989, at South Park Cemetery. (Please call Ballard Funeral Home to confirm service time.) Mrs. Bebe Clements, 95, of Route 3, Box 608C, Roswell, N.M., died Friday, July 21, 1989, at Casa Maria Nursing Center. Officiating will be Dr. Douglas Wofford of the First United Methodist Church. Bebe Clements, fondly known as "The Lady in Red," was born July 20, 1894, in Carlsbad, N.M. She was the oldest child of Seth L. Mills and Montez Estelle Wilburn, who preceded her in death. She grew up in New Mexico and Texas, where she lived in dugouts, tents and 'shed rooms' and describes her 95 years of life with, "Honey, it's a long way from a dugout to a man on the moon." She married George Clements in 1937 in Roswell and took an active part in running their Muleshoe Ranch south of Picacho and their irrigated farm at Riverside. She rode fences, chased off coyotes, helped with lambing and many other accomplishments which well qualified her for induction into the 1984 "Cowgirl Hall of Fame" at Hereford, Texas. George and Bebe had no children but they are survived by numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and a host of friends and their 'adopted' caretakers, Rogelio and Lupe Gonzales. Mrs. Clements was a member of the Roswell Business Professional Women's Club and Roswell Service League. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband George Clements, who died in 1973; two sisters, Mrs. Seth Walter and Mrs. Chere Cayton; and a nephew, Charles Mills, Jr. Survivors include a niece, Mrs. Dedi Hoeck of Reno, Nev.; a nephew, John B. Mills of Abilene, Texas; and a sister-in-law, Blanche Mills of Eastland, Texas. Pallbearers will be Hud Rhea, Phelps Anderson, Joe Skeen, Billie Frank Runyan, John Mills, John Bassett, David Roe and Phelps White, III. Honorary pallbearers will be John Chappal, Dr. Steve Marshall, Sylvan Gillespie and Ronnie Meyer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one's favorite charity. Arrangements are being handled by the Ballard Funeral Home. References
