    Bio: Dr. Carstell O. Stewart expired on Monday, October 30, 2006 at Visiting Nurse Hospice Care Center, 3358 Ridgewood Road, at the age 86 years old.

    He was born on January 5, 1920 to Zeb and Pearl Stewart in Benson, N.C. At age of a year old the family moved to Albany, N.Y., where he grew up, attended and graduated from Albany High School in Albany, N.Y. He was the first black to play football and run track at Albany High School and he received a scholarship to Morgan State College in Baltimore, Md. He also ran in the PENN Relays and won several medals. He entered Morgan State College in 1940. While in college, Carstell's athletic fetes included being a sprint champion, all CIAA and a running back for the football team. He was elected President of the Junior Class.

    While still in college, Carstell joined the Enlisted Reserve Corp., U.S. Army in 1942 and was called to active duty in March of 1943. He was selected to become a member of the 555th Parachute Test Platoon and went to Fort Benning, Ga., for parachute training. After weeks of training, 16 members of the Test Platoon group qualified to become paratroopers after making the necessary jumps. Upon returning to camp from a death in his family, Carstell then became the 17th member of the Test Platoon group and received his Parachute Wings. Carstell was selected to become a candidate for Officer's Training School. He received an Honorable Discharge from the 555th Test Platoon, March 1946, with the rank of Technical Sergeant. Returning to Morgan State College in 1946, he graduated in July 1946. He then entered Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, Cleveland, Ohio, graduating in 1951, as a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine. Carstell practiced Podiatric Medicine in Akron, Ohio for more than 40 years, retiring in 1998. During his years of practice, he was presented with an Outstanding Podiatric Physician Medicine Award in 1996 and was on the staff of Akron General Hospital that is designated as one of the best one hundred hospitals in the United States. Carstell had been President of the Akron Chapter of the Frontiers International, Inc., and a founding member of XI Chi Chapter, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Akron, Ohio and a member of this organization for more than 50 years. He was a life member of the NAACP, and a member of St. Philips Episcopal Church of Akron, Ohio. A most prestigious honor was given to Carstell when The Greater Ohio Chapter of the 555th Parachute Infantry Association in Cleveland, Ohio changed its name to the Carstell O. Stewart 555th Parachute Infantry Association Chapter.

    Dr. Stewart was preceded in death by his parents, Zeb and Pearl Stewart; his adopted mother, Mae Douglas, who raised him after his parents died from age 7; brother, Joddie Stewart and adopted brother, Leroy Bell Douglas.

    Left to cherish his memories, loving wife of 61 years, Mary E.; sons, Attorney Anthony Leroy Stewart of Stafford, Va., Timothy Mark (Dr. Greta M. ) Stewart of Sicklerville, N.J., and Wilfred Brian Stewart of Memphis, Tenn.; grandchildren, Anthony Warren (Cheryl) Stewart of Columbus, Ohio, Braxton Octavian Stewart, Timothy Mark Stewart, Jr., Sidney Lee Stewart, Elizabeth Stewart, Gabrielle Romona Stewart and Ajanti Willete Stewart; great-grandchildren, Anthony Carstell Stewart, Parker Carstell Stewart and Skyler Mary Elizabeth Stewart; sisters-in-law, European H. Holland of Ft. Campbell, Ky., and Rosalyn Salome Parker of Clarksville, Tenn.; Aunt Josephine Long of Albany, N.Y.; two special nieces, Renee (Derek) O'Neil of Okemah, Mich., and Marsha (Pete) Prescott of East Hampton, N.Y.

    Funeral services Saturday, November 4, 2006 at 12 Noon at St. Philip's Episcopal Church, 1130 Mercer Ave., Akron, Ohio, Rev. Albert Jennings officiating. Interment at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, Ohio. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 5 until 8 p.m. on Friday, November 3, 2006. Procession will form and condolences may be sent to 2387 Audubon Rd., Akron, OH 44320.
