Carolyn was a telephone operator in Chicago before 1910. She met Michael Garnett because he would often call her switchboard and he wanted to meet “the girl with the sunshine in her voice.” Carolyn evidently also worked as a telephone operator for the U.S. Government, at the Marine Corps base located in Twentynine Palms, California.

I remember my grandmother as a very religious woman. She always had spirtual magazines sitting around her apartment. I suspect that my lack of religious upbringing disappointed her just a bit, but she never made a fuss over it.

She made the best beef barley soup in the world. To this day, I compare all soups to her soup, and they all fall short. She also introduced me to lamb chops. I still remember the mint jelly she served with it.,
