Caroline Deslonde married P.G.T. Beauregard (1818-1893) after his first wife died in 1850. Caroline D. Beauregard had been ill since about 1862. General Beauregard was in Florida when he received a telegram, informing him of her death in March 1864. He then returned to Charleston, South Carolina, for further details. Over 6,000 citizens attended her funeral in New Orleans, which was then in Federal hands. General Nathaniel P. Banks, in an act of kindness, provided a steamer to carry her remains to her native parish. General Beauregard believed that she had said "The country comes before me," and he is said to have had those words inscribed on her tomb. It is believed that such a marble slab existed in this cemetery, but her tomb is now unmarked.
