Carlton returned from war suffering from shell shock. His relatives put him in a hammock over water, when he was use to this they cut the ropes. It is said he got his voice back to curse, however he was never the same. 

Carlton and his half brother always seem to be in trouble with the law after the war, he had a troubled life.

His service record states he was married to Mary A'Vard, this maybe Mary Fullarton b 1885
