Campbell Raiford, son of Morris Raiford, born in Jefferson County, Ga., April 11th, 1809, died at Auburn, Alabama, March 29th, 1868, nearly being 59 years old.
In 1836, he was married to Elizabeth Bostick, and moved to Culloden; thence, in 1851 to Auburn, Ala. He married his second wife, mrs. Henrietta A. Wimberly, in Auburn. She survives him, and with her four children, mourns his loss. Bro. Raiford was, from his youth, a member of the Methodist Church, and lived consistently with her discipline and doctrines. For years he was a faithful Sunday-school teacher and superintendent, and latterly discharged with zeal and efficiency, the duties of class leader. The church was in his heart. He watched her interests with a jealous eye. He was a close listener to sermons, and treasured up what he had heard in his mind and heart, as well as in a diary, which was constantly kept. He was a faithful, conscientious, consistent, practical Christian. There was about him not a particle of pharisaical ostentation and pretension. He was one "In whose eyes a vile person is condemned; but he honoreth them that fear the Lord." During the last year of his life, his pastor testifies, that he perceived in him marked growth in spirituality, and a ripening for his change. He met death, as a Christian should, without alarm, peacefully and patiently. From the beginning of his attack of pneumonia, which was violent, and lasted two weeks, he believed he would die; made proper preparation, gave direction in reference to his business, and spoke blessed words to his family and friends. On Sunday morning, just before the sun arose to shine upon the earth, his eyes were closed here, but his spirit awoke to see the light and glory of the celestial home. We shall miss him. Severe, indeed is the loss to his family; for he was remarkably domestic, and devoted to their comfort. The community will miss him. For seventeen years he has been before them, daily, an upright, quiet, business man. The church will miss him, a faithful servant, a constant attendant, a man of conservative counsel. Jesse Wood
