  5. His obituary confirms that he was the son of Augustus Black, but doesn't mention his mother. He was either born Oct 1852, the month Maria (McBride) Black died, or he was the son of an unknown woman after Maria died. There doesn't appear to be evidence that Augustus remarried, but possibly he had a second wife who also died young - possibly a member of the Owens family with whom Calvin was listed in the 1860 census. However, since Calvin's birth month is identified as Oct in the 1900 census, it seems reasonable to assume he was born Oct 1852 and his age was understated in subsequent records.
