Y., May 3, 1827; married May 7,1777, Abigail Woodhouse, born at Wethersfield, Conn., Mar. 31, 1753; died Jan. 20, 1823; daughter of William and Mary (Walker) Woodhouse of Wethersfield.
Butler Gilbert served as clerk of Capt. Return Jonathan Meigs's company, the Fourth Company of the Second Regiment, Col. Joseph Spencer's, from May 5,1775, to Dec. 10,1775. Enlisted again Dec. 27, 1776, in the first Troop of Col. Elisha Sheldon's Light Dragoons, for the war. Described as a farmer, residing at Middletown, Conn., 5 ft. 8 in. in height, dark complexion and blue eyes; became Sergeant; discharged Sept. 10, 1780. Butler Gilbert removed from Middletown, Conn., to New Lebanon, N. Y., about 1781; removed from there to Gilbert's Lake, Otsego Co., N. Y., before 1798. His wife and children were baptized at Cooperstown 1798; removed to Morris, N. Y. Butler Gilbert and wife Abigail, William Gilbert and wife Martha, are buried in Old Harmony Churchyard, Morris, Otsego Co., N. Y."
