Bratton M. Samples

  • Bratton M. Samples was born September 23, 1867 and died October 30, 1951. He was a son of Harvey and Sarah Jane (Jones) Samples. He married Eliza Samples. Eliza, a daughter of Salathiel and Melcina (Ashley) Samples, was born January 20, 1873 and died June 3, 1937.
  • Bratton worked with his father in the timber and mercantile business under the name of "H. SAMPLES & SON." When his father retired, Bratton continued to operate a general store in the same location until the building was destroyed by fire. Bratton built a new store building on State Route 4 at the foot of the Dulls Creek mountain. The Procious Post Office was moved to this new building and Bratton became postmaster. When he retired, he sold the building to Stanley Dean who in turn sold to Molly Procious. When Molly retired, the building was demolished.
  • On one of Bratton's business trips to Charleston, the steamboat he was riding on exploded and broke his leg. This was probably "THE BOB HENRY" that exploded in Blue Creek in 1888. Although Blue Creek is not on the direct route between Procious and Charleston, passengers usually go where the boat goes.
