Knowledge of Betsey's maiden name seems to depend on interpretation of the Johnston District Marriage Register entry, which seems to be quite difficult.

The researcher who decided the name is Goreham also reports Betsey was daughter of Philo & Mariah (Bard) Goreham, and was born 28 May 1826 in Vermont or New York.[2] This birth and parentage data depends on having previously identified Betsey's maiden name, so if that is wrong, the birth data is not relevant. Whether the "Goreham" conclusion was based only on the marriage, or had a basis on further evidence (such as a Goreham will) is not known. (One additional variation is that "Goreham" is not from the marriage entry, but that Betsey was a widow of a Goschand (approximately), and other data is needed to establish a maiden name.)
