Found William in Guilford Co., NC in 1870. Since Ervil (or Arvil) was the only Self in Guilford Co in 180 and shows a son 18-26 (1794-1802), It appears to be clean match.

William has another brother (b. 1810-1820) and three sisters in 1820.

Also in the 1870 census is Benjamin Self, b. 1810. He would be the yoiunger brother. The fleet of Selfs in the 1870 census could be descendants of Wm or Benjamin.
