    BENJAMIN PHILLIPS CLAIMED BY DEATH

    Benjamin (Ben) Dowell Phillips of 208 Fewel street died yesterday in a hospital. He was 83.

    Mr. Phillips was a member of the Holy Family Church and Knights of Columbus Council 638.

    He was a former assistant county auditor, early railroader and grandson of Ben Dowell, El Paso's first Mayor. Between his railroading days and his job as deputy county auditor in 1920, he learned the electrician's trade and worked for El Paso Electric Co.

    Mr. Phillips is survived by his widow, Mrs. Dolores C. Phillips; two sons, Dr. B. A. Phillips of El Paso and Dr. J. T. Phillips of Austin, a sister, Mrs. Rose Poppenhusen of Houston, and two brothers, Robert B. Phillips of San Diego and G. D. Preto of San Francisco.

    Funeral arrangements were pending with Kaster and Maxon Funeral Home.
